Provenance

Origins should never be confused.

Everything on this site that represents an experience, an inference or a result carries a label — including the human-contributed examples. If only some things were labelled, the unlabelled ones would look verified.

Origin

Where an experience came from. Every experience has exactly one.

Synthetic — constructed

Synthetic — constructed

A constructed life history. No person lived these events. It is built by our research team from a written design brief, for a stated research purpose, and reviewed before use.

Contributed — as recalled

Contributed — as recalled

Recounted by a consenting participant in a guided interview. A recollection, not a verified record. Shown only with permission, with identifying details changed.

Status

What kind of data you are looking at. Stacks with the origin label.

Illustrative — not real data

Illustrative — not real data

Written by our team to show the format. No interview took place and no model was run. No result is implied.

Simulated — model runs

Simulated — model runs

Produced by running a model, with the number of runs, the date and the model stated alongside. Not yet an evaluated result.

Measured — see report

Measured — see report

A result from a controlled evaluation. Always shown with a link to the dated evaluation report it comes from.

BEDROCK layers

Inside an experiential graph: what was reported, what was inferred, and what is only suspected.

Reported — in their words

Reported — in their words

What a person recalled, or how they themselves interpret it. Evidence of a recollection — not a verified record of what happened.

Interpretation — inferred

Interpretation — inferred by BEDROCK

A belief the platform infers from several reported experiences. Always a hypothesis, with its evidence, the agreement between sources, and a confidence level.

Hypothesis — causal link

Hypothesis — a proposed causal link

A suggested connection between experiences and beliefs. Recorded so it can be tested, revised or discarded as new evidence arrives.

How an image on this site was made.

Render — CGI

Render — computer-generated

A computer-generated image made for this site. It does not depict a real product, factory, robot or person.

The rules we hold ourselves to

  1. Labels appear at first sight, inside the frame.

Never in a footnote, a menu or the terms.

  2. Labels never fade or move during animation.

They stay put while a scene plays.

  3. Shape and words, never colour alone.

A filled circle is contributed; a hollow square is synthetic; a dashed outline is illustrative.

  4. Confidence is a word, with its reason.

Built from the amount of evidence and how far sources agree. Never a percentage.

  5. No result without a dated report.

Nothing is labelled measured unless it links to the evaluation it came from.

  6. A label can’t fix a misleading demo.

If a demonstration would mislead, we change the demonstration.
